Claire is a Wisconsin certified teacher of Chinese, French, and German, and taught Languages in the Madison Metropolitan School District for 25 years. She has been named Wisconsin Distinguished Foreign Language Educator, 2005

Claire has taught Foreign Language Methodology courses in The People’s Republic of China, at Middlebury College in Vermont, and at Ball State University in Indiana and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She was an adjunct and course instructor for the Asian Studies Summer Institute at Kalamazoo College, Michigan.

She has won numerous curriculum development awards and received fellowships from Carnegie-Mellon, Rockefeller, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. She served on the National Task Force for Chinese Language Teaching Standards, has been an officer in two national language organizations and has served on the board of several others. She is one of 25 national experts working with the Asia Society, New York City, to develop a handbook for establishing Chinese language programs in schools in the United States.

Claire has published numerous articles on language teaching and provided consulting expertise for the establishment of language programs throughout the United States. She is a member of the Task Force for the National Chinese Initiative sponsored by the National Foreign Language Center in Washington, D.C. 

Claire led several study tours to China for Kalamazoo College and, in 2006, served as University of Wisconsin lecturer leading a China Environmental Study Tour to Sichuan Province and the Tibetan Plateau. She and Kathy lead active women’s trips to France each September.
